TCN Strengthens Staff Wellness With Preventive Healthcare By Raymond Enoch

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reinforced its commitment to employee well-being by organising a preventive healthcare sensitisation and medical screening programme for staff in its Abuja Region, aimed at promoting healthy living and the early detection of life-threatening diseases.

The initiative, organised by TCN’s Medical Department on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, is part of the company’s ongoing workplace health programme being implemented across offices within the Abuja Region to encourage preventive healthcare and improve staff wellness.

As part of the exercise, employees underwent free medical screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar and hepatitis tests, while receiving expert guidance on maintaining healthy lifestyles and preventing chronic illnesses.

Speaking during the sensitisation programme, Assistant Manager, Medicals, Nurse Jenifer Akubuobi, educated staff on the dangers of non-communicable diseases—commonly referred to as “silent killers”—such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. She explained that these conditions often develop without obvious symptoms, making regular medical check-ups essential for early diagnosis and timely treatment.

She urged employees to make routine health screening a regular habit, noting that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes and reduces the risk of severe health complications.

The medical team also advised staff who were referred for further medical evaluation to honour their hospital appointments without delay. Employees currently receiving treatment for chronic health conditions were reminded not to discontinue their prescribed medications simply because they feel better, stressing that adherence to treatment remains critical for effective disease management.

Beyond medical screening, the team encouraged workers to adopt healthier lifestyles by eating balanced diets, consuming hygienically prepared meals, engaging in regular physical exercise and avoiding the indiscriminate use of unverified herbal remedies.

The health professionals further identified excessive consumption of salt and sugar, smoking and excessive alcohol intake as major risk factors for preventable diseases, urging employees to embrace healthier choices that support long-term well-being.

The sensitisation programme reflects TCN’s broader commitment to safeguarding the health of its workforce through continuous health education, routine medical screening and preventive healthcare initiatives, recognising that a healthy workforce remains essential to delivering reliable electricity transmission services across the country.
