International Boy Child Day 2026: Dr Princess Joy Idam Advocates Stronger Protection, Support for Boys By Raymond Enoch

Publisher and media advocate, Dr. Princess Joy Idam, has called for increased attention to the welfare, protection and emotional well-being of the boy child, urging families, governments and community leaders to work together in building a safer and more supportive environment for boys.

In a press statement issued to mark the 2026 International Boy Child Day celebrated annually on May 16, Dr. Idam said the future of society depends greatly on how boys are nurtured, educated and guided today.

She noted that this year’s theme, “Building Positive Futures for Boys: Nurture, Educate, Protect,” serves as a strong reminder of the urgent need to address the growing social and emotional challenges affecting boys across communities.

According to her, while efforts to promote the rights and welfare of the girl child have recorded significant progress over the years, there is also a need to give adequate attention to the struggles faced by boys.

Dr. Idam expressed concern over increasing cases of violence, peer pressure, substance abuse, bullying and the lack of positive male role models affecting many young boys.

She also observed that societal expectations often discourage boys from expressing emotions or seeking help during difficult situations, thereby exposing them to mental and emotional stress.

“The protection and empowerment of the boy child should never be seen as a competition with the girl child agenda. Both are important for a balanced, peaceful and progressive society,” she stated.

“A boy who is properly nurtured, educated and protected will grow into a responsible man who respects women, values justice and contributes positively to national development.”

The Publisher/CEO further called on governments at all levels to strengthen policies and programmes that focus on the education, mental health and protection of boys, particularly those living in vulnerable communities.

She stressed the importance of promoting positive masculinity by teaching boys emotional intelligence, responsibility, discipline and respect for gender equality from an early age.

Dr. Idam also urged stakeholders to intensify efforts against child labour, violence, exploitation and the recruitment of young boys into criminal and violent activities.

As part of activities to support the boy child, she announced plans for a special programme scheduled for May 27, 2026, aimed at celebrating, mentoring and empowering boys through meaningful engagement and interaction with positive role models.

She reaffirmed her commitment to using the media as a platform to amplify issues affecting children and to advocate policies that support the holistic development of every Nigerian child, regardless of gender.
