Press Week 2026: NUJ FCT Collaborates With Nizamiye Hospital, Offers Free Medical Services to Journalists By Raymond Enoch
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, has organised a free medical outreach for journalists as part of activities marking the 2026 Press Week celebration in Abuja.
The health initiative, held at the NUJ FCT Secretariat Utako Abuja, provided journalists with access to free medical consultations and basic health screenings aimed at promoting their wellbeing and encouraging regular health checks.
Medical personnel from Nizamiye Hospital conducted blood pressure checks, blood sugar tests, eye examinations, and other routine screenings, while also offering professional health advice to participants.
Speaking during the outreach, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council Comrade Grace Ike described the exercise as part of the union’s commitment to the welfare of journalists, noting that the demanding nature of media practice often exposes practitioners to stress-related health challenges.
Comrade Ike commended Nizamiye Hospital for supporting journalists through the initiative, stressing that regular medical checkups are important for professionals working in stressful environments.
Representatives of Nizamiye Hospital reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to supporting humanitarian and community health programmes, adding that preventive healthcare remains essential for maintaining a productive workforce.
Journalists who benefited from the exercise commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, especially amid the pressures associated with the profession.
The free medical outreach is among several activities lined up for the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week celebration aimed at promoting press freedom, professionalism, and journalists’ welfare.
