Former ECOWAS Commission President James Victor Gbeho Dies at 91 By Raymond Enoch

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the passing of former President of the ECOWAS Commission, James Victor Gbeho, who died on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91.

In a statement issued from Abuja on June 14, the ECOWAS Commission expressed profound sorrow over the death of the veteran Ghanaian diplomat and statesman, describing him as a dedicated champion of regional integration, peacebuilding, and diplomacy.

Gbeho served as President of the ECOWAS Commission from February 18, 2010, to March 1, 2012, during a critical period following the 2007 institutional reforms that transformed the ECOWAS Executive Secretariat into a Commission. According to the regional body, his leadership helped strengthen the institution’s architecture, deepen regional integration, and enhance ECOWAS’s reputation as one of Africa’s most successful regional organizations.

Before assuming the Commission’s presidency, Gbeho had already played a significant role in ECOWAS affairs. In September 1995, he was appointed Special Representative for Liberia, where he contributed to regional efforts aimed at restoring peace, stability, and constitutional order in the country.

A distinguished diplomat, Gbeho held several high-profile national and international positions throughout his career. He served as Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, and United Nations Special Representative for Somalia.

The ECOWAS Commission noted that his lifelong commitment to diplomacy, regional cooperation, and public service earned him admiration across West Africa and beyond. His contributions to Ghana, the sub-region, and the international community, the Commission said, would be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.

ECOWAS extended condolences to the family of the late diplomat, the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, and the wider diplomatic community across West Africa.

“The Commission joins them in mourning the loss of an accomplished diplomat, an esteemed regional leader, and a dedicated servant of peace and integration,” the statement said.

Ambassador James Victor Gbeho leaves behind a legacy of service, diplomacy, and commitment to the ideals of regional unity that continue to shape West Africa’s integration agenda.
