Urgent Maintenance at Katampe 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation, Warns of Temporary Power Disruption By Raymond Enoch
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced an urgent maintenance operation at its 330/132/33kV Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja, with some electricity consumers expected to experience temporary interruptions in supply.
The emergency exercise, which was scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2026, was necessitated by an oil leakage detected on one of the transformers at the substation.
According to TCN, its maintenance crew was deployed to the facility to seal the leakage and prevent the fault from developing into a more serious problem that could affect the reliability of the transmission infrastructure.
The maintenance was scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. and end at 7:00 p.m., a nine-hour intervention aimed at restoring the affected transformer to proper operating condition.
TCN said some circuits would be impacted during the exercise, consequently limiting the ability of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to off-take electricity from some feeders connected to the affected transformer.
The disruption was therefore expected to affect electricity customers supplied through those feeders during the maintenance period.
The transmission company, however, described the interruption as temporary and necessary to enable its technical team address the transformer oil leakage.
“During the maintenance some circuits will be impacted,” TCN said in its notice to the public.
The company further explained that AEDC would be unable to off-take electricity from some feeders to customers supplied from the affected transformer.
TCN apologised to electricity consumers in the affected areas for the inconvenience arising from the maintenance exercise, stressing that the intervention was required to address the technical issue at the Katampe substation.
The Katampe intervention is part of TCN’s ongoing maintenance activities aimed at preserving the integrity and reliability of critical transmission infrastructure across the country.
The company has in recent days announced several maintenance interventions at transmission facilities, including the Gwagwalada and Sagamu substations, as part of efforts to improve the reliability of the national transmission network.
