Katsina Power Boost: TCN, Imcomtel Ready 200MVA Transformers for Major Substation Installation By Raymond Enoch
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Imcomtel Engineering Limited have stepped up preparations for the next major phase of the Katsina 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation Project, with a joint technical inspection of the facility ahead of the installation of two 100MVA power transformers.
The inspection, conducted on Thursday, September 24, 2026, focused on assessing the readiness of the substation’s civil works, equipment locations and supporting infrastructure as the project moves into a critical installation phase.
The TCN Katsina Sub-Region team was led by the Assistant General Manager (Transmission), Engr. Usman Idris, who received the Imcomtel delegation headed by Engr. Emmanuel Okafor.
During the inspection, the technical teams examined key sections of the substation to establish that the facility and its supporting infrastructure are adequately prepared for the installation and integration of major transmission equipment.
A major focus of the exercise was the assessment of two 100MVA power transformers delivered to the project site on July 9, 2026, alongside their designated transformer plinths.
The transformers are expected to significantly increase transmission capacity in Katsina State and contribute to strengthening electricity transmission across the wider North-West region when fully installed and integrated into the transmission network.
The inspection also covered four newly delivered state-of-the-art control rooms designed to accommodate critical protection, monitoring and control systems required for the effective operation of the substation.
The technical assessment provided an opportunity for TCN and Imcomtel engineers to review outstanding requirements, examine site conditions and ensure that necessary preparations are completed before the commencement of the next installation activities.
At the conclusion of the inspection, both teams aligned on the final technical requirements and site preparations needed to facilitate smooth coordination as the project advances towards completion.
The TCN inspection team included the Principal Manager, Engr. Mustapha Idowu, as well as Heads of Technical Departments who participated in the technical assessment of the project.
The development marks another significant step in the expansion and reinforcement of transmission infrastructure in Katsina and the North-West, with the additional transformer capacity expected to provide greater flexibility for the transmission network once the installation and commissioning processes are completed.
