TCN to End Power Surgr in Katsina with New Transformers,Says Grid Expansion Project to Deliver 160MW,Strengthen Electricity Supply Across North-West By Raymond Enoch

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has recorded a major milestone in its national grid expansion programme with the arrival of two 100MVA power transformers for the ongoing 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Katsina State, a development expected to significantly improve electricity supply across the North-West.

The transformers were received by TCN’s Kano Region on Thursday, July 9, 2026, for installation at the strategic transmission facility currently under construction in Katsina.

The delivery marks another critical step in TCN’s drive to modernise Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and expand the capacity of the national grid to meet rising electricity demand.

According to the company, the newly delivered transformers are key components required for the completion of the substation. Upon installation, testing and commissioning, they will add 160 megawatts (MW) to the region’s transmission capacity, enabling the evacuation and delivery of more bulk electricity to Distribution Companies (DisCos) serving Katsina State and neighbouring areas.

Beyond increasing capacity, the new substation is expected to improve the reliability, flexibility and operational efficiency of power transmission in the region, reducing network constraints and strengthening grid stability.

Industry observers say the project will enhance power availability for homes, businesses and industries, while supporting economic growth by providing a more robust transmission network capable of accommodating future electricity demand.

The Katsina project forms part of TCN’s nationwide transmission expansion and reinforcement programme aimed at upgrading critical infrastructure, improving grid resilience and ensuring that generated electricity can be efficiently transmitted to electricity distribution companies across the country.

With the delivery of the transformers, attention now shifts to their installation and commissioning, bringing the long-awaited Katsina transmission substation closer to completion and energisation. Once operational, the facility is expected to become a key power transmission hub for Katsina State and the wider North-West geopolitical zone.
