TCN Partners Transport Ministry on Kano Rail Power, Says Grid Project to Boost Railway Operations, Infrastructure By Raymond Enoch
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal Ministry of Transportation to provide reliable electricity to the Kano Railway Station and other key railway operational facilities through connection to the National Grid.
The initiative was formalised during a high-level stakeholders’ engagement held on July 7, 2026, at the TCN Kano Regional Headquarters, where government agencies, power sector operators, consultants and project contractors mapped out the framework for implementing the project.
The proposed grid connection is expected to significantly improve the reliability of power supply to the railway infrastructure, enhancing operational efficiency, reducing service disruptions and supporting the Federal Government’s drive to modernise Nigeria’s transportation network.
Discussions at the meeting focused on the technical requirements for the project, implementation timelines, operational coordination, compliance with national grid standards, network safety and the respective responsibilities of stakeholders to ensure seamless execution.
Speaking during the engagement, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among all parties, noting that early technical planning and coordination would guarantee successful project delivery and dependable electricity supply to the railway facilities.
He said the partnership reflects TCN’s commitment to supporting critical national infrastructure through efficient transmission services, adding that reliable electricity remains fundamental to the smooth operation of modern railway systems.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to working collectively to deliver the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda, expressing confidence that the initiative would strengthen rail services and improve transportation across the country.
Participants at the meeting included representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Region, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Team Nigeria, the project’s consultants, and the project contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The planned connection of the Kano railway facilities to the National Grid marks another milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to integrate reliable power infrastructure with strategic transportation assets, reinforcing national economic growth and improving public service delivery.
