Gambia Hosts ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament TOLAC 2026 By Raymond Enoch
The 14th edition of the ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament (TOLAC 2026) is set to take place in Banjul, Republic of The Gambia, from May 15 to 17, 2026, bringing together some of the finest traditional wrestlers from across West Africa.
Organised by the Economic Community of West African States, the tournament is regarded as one of the region’s foremost sporting and cultural events aimed at promoting unity, cultural heritage, and regional integration among member states.
According to the ECOWAS Commission, the championship reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to strengthening African cultural values and fostering social cohesion through sports and youth engagement.
The tournament, coordinated through the ECOWAS Centre for Youth and Sports Development, will feature athletes representing member countries in traditional African wrestling contests known for their rich cultural significance and display of strength, discipline, and heritage.
Officials say the competition will also provide an avenue for cultural exchange, friendship, and deeper cooperation among the peoples of West Africa, while showcasing the enduring relevance of traditional sports in promoting peace and solidarity across the sub-region.
The hosting of TOLAC 2026 further positions The Gambia as a growing hub for regional sporting and cultural diplomacy, as spectators and delegations from across the ECOWAS region converge on Banjul for the three-day event.
ECOWAS noted that the tournament aligns with broader efforts to empower young people and preserve Africa’s indigenous sporting traditions for future generations.
