EU Hails Nigeria’s Democratic Progress on Democracy Day 2026 By Raymond Enoch
The European Union (EU) has congratulated Nigeria on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, commending the country’s resilience, democratic growth, and the active participation of citizens in shaping a more inclusive future.
In a Democracy Day message, the Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, described democracy as a continuous journey driven by dialogue, participation, accountability, and the collective aspirations of the people.
According to the Ambassador, Democracy Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s journey from military dictatorship to democratic governance, while recognizing the millions of citizens who continue to contribute to strengthening democratic institutions and processes.
He noted that Nigeria’s democracy has continued to evolve through citizen engagement, institutional reforms, and the determination of communities demanding accountability and greater representation.
“Democracy is not a single moment. It is a movement. It thrives in the work of institutions, in the participation of citizens, in peaceful dialogue, and in the belief that progress must belong to everyone,” Mignot stated.
The EU envoy praised the growing role of women, young people, civil society organizations, and grassroots communities in expanding democratic participation across the country despite prevailing challenges.
Reaffirming the EU’s commitment to Nigeria’s democratic development, Mignot highlighted the impact of the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Programme, which continues to strengthen institutions, encourage inclusive participation, and promote democratic engagement.
He said the EU remains actively engaged with Nigeria’s electoral institutions, peace-building initiatives, legislative bodies, and justice sector stakeholders to deepen accountability, uphold the rule of law, and foster national cohesion before, during, and beyond elections.
The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of inclusive governance, noting that the EU continues to support initiatives that enhance the participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in democratic processes.
In the digital space, he added, the EU is partnering with independent media organizations, civic information platforms, and fact-checking networks to promote credible information and strengthen democratic discourse.
Mignot stressed that democracy flourishes when citizens believe their voices matter and are empowered to participate meaningfully in national development.
He further noted that through the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, the bloc remains committed to supporting partnerships that create opportunities, strengthen participation, and build resilience for future generations.
Describing democracy as a shared responsibility, the Ambassador urged continued efforts to protect, strengthen, and renew democratic values.
“Democracy is never finished and must never be taken for granted. It must be protected, strengthened and renewed together,” he said.
He concluded by extending warm wishes to Nigerians on the country’s Democracy Day celebration.
“Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.” — Ambassador Gautier Mignot.
