ECOWAS Honours Departing Sahel Staff in a Grand Ceremony By Raymond Enoch

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission paid a glowing tribute to staff members from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, whose service with the regional body formally came to an end, marking a solemn yet dignified moment in the institution’s history.

The ceremony, held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, brought together top officials, senior management and colleagues in a gathering that blended appreciation with reflection on the enduring ideals of regional cooperation.

Presiding over the event, the President of the Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, led a distinguished lineup of dignitaries including Auditor-General João Alage Mamadu Fadia, Commissioner for Internal Services Habibu Bappah, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture Kalilou Sylla, and Director of Human Resources Vitorino Bamba.

In their remarks, speakers underscored the indispensable role staff members play in advancing ECOWAS’ mandate, noting that beyond policies and frameworks, it is the dedication of individuals that sustains the vision of a united and prosperous West Africa.

Special recognition was accorded to personnel from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger—whose contracts concluded on April 15, 2026. Their years of service, commitment and professionalism were praised as instrumental to the Commission’s work in fostering regional integration, peacebuilding and economic development.

The atmosphere was both reflective and respectful, as colleagues recounted shared experiences and acknowledged the contributions of those departing. The ceremony served not only as a farewell but also as a reaffirmation of ECOWAS’ core values of solidarity, unity and mutual respect among member states.

Observers note that the event comes at a delicate time in regional relations, making the Commission’s gesture one of symbolic importance—emphasising that institutional ties and shared aspirations for West Africa transcend political shifts.

As the honoured staff members take the next steps in their professional journeys, ECOWAS reaffirmed its appreciation for their service and reiterated its commitment to strengthening cooperation across the region.

The ceremony ended on a note of gratitude and quiet optimism, with a shared belief that the bonds forged within the Commission will continue to inspire collaboration for the peace, stability and development of West Africa.
