ECOWAS Deepens Investment in Regional Healthcare with New Maternity, Paediatric Complex in Guinea-Bissau, Underscores Commitment to Saving Mothers and Children Across West Africa By Raymond Enoch
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to record another milestone in its regional development agenda as it prepares to officially hand over a newly constructed Maternity and Paediatric Complex to the Regional Hospital of Bafatá in Guinea-Bissau on 6 August 2026, reaffirming the regional bloc’s growing investment in strengthening healthcare systems across West Africa.
The state-of-the-art facility, financed through the ECOWAS Regional Fund for Stabilisation and Development (FRSD) at a cost of USD 638,538.05, is expected to significantly improve maternal and child healthcare services in one of Guinea-Bissau’s key regions, providing thousands of women and children with access to safer deliveries, improved neonatal care and quality paediatric services.
The project is part of a broader USD 1.8 million ECOWAS Direct Investment Programme in Guinea-Bissau, designed to strengthen essential social infrastructure and promote sustainable development in the country.
Beyond the construction of a modern healthcare facility, the initiative reflects ECOWAS’ strategic commitment to building resilient, inclusive and people-centred health systems capable of responding to the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations across the region.
The project was implemented with the support of the Government of Germany and in collaboration with national authorities in Guinea-Bissau, demonstrating the importance of international partnerships in accelerating development and improving public health outcomes.
Healthcare experts have consistently identified access to quality maternal and child healthcare as one of the critical pillars for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to reducing maternal mortality, ending preventable deaths of newborns and children, and ensuring healthy lives for all.
For ECOWAS, the Bafatá Maternity and Paediatric Complex represents more than a physical infrastructure project. It embodies the regional organisation’s vision of translating regional integration into tangible benefits for citizens through investments that improve lives and strengthen social cohesion.
In recent years, ECOWAS has expanded its interventions beyond peace and security to include strategic investments in healthcare, education, water supply, agriculture, renewable energy and community resilience across Member States.
These initiatives are implemented through the Regional Fund for Stabilisation and Development, which supports projects aimed at reducing inequalities, promoting stability and fostering inclusive economic growth.
The commissioning of the Bafatá facility is expected to enhance the capacity of the Regional Hospital to provide comprehensive maternal, neonatal and paediatric services while reducing pressure on existing healthcare infrastructure.
The new complex will also contribute to improving healthcare delivery standards and expanding access to quality medical services for families in the region.

The official handover ceremony on 6 August 2026 is expected to bring together senior ECOWAS officials, representatives of the Government of Guinea-Bissau, development partners, healthcare professionals and community leaders to celebrate another milestone in regional cooperation for sustainable development.
