Defence Minister Backs World Social Forum Caravan, Pledges Full Support for Nigeria Hosting Efforts By Raymond Enoch
Nigeria’s preparations for the forthcoming World Social Forum activities received a significant boost as the Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, pledged support for the initiative during a courtesy visit by a high-powered delegation led by the World Social Forum Nigeria Focal Person, Zainab Mohammed.
The delegation, headed by Chief Ambassador Zainab Mohammed, met with the Defence Minister to seek collaboration and support for the planned World Social Forum Caravan scheduled to take place across Nigeria, as well as broader preparations for the global social movement’s activities in the country.
Speaking during the visit, Amb. Mohammed highlighted the importance of the caravan in promoting social inclusion, peacebuilding, citizen engagement and national development. She noted that the support and partnership of key government institutions, particularly the Ministry of Defence, would be crucial to the success of the initiative.
According to her, the World Social Forum provides a platform for dialogue, community participation and collective action on issues affecting societies, making collaboration with critical stakeholders essential.
In his response, the Defence Minister commended the delegation for its vision and commitment to advancing initiatives that promote national unity, social cohesion and development. He expressed satisfaction with the objectives of the proposed caravan and assured the team of the ministry’s willingness to work with them.
The minister described the initiative as one capable of fostering greater public engagement and strengthening national values, stressing that efforts aimed at promoting peace, inclusion and social progress deserve support.
He consequently pledged the ministry’s backing for the project and assured the delegation that the Ministry of Defence would support the initiative in every way possible within its mandate.
The meeting is expected to open a new chapter of collaboration between the World Social Forum Nigeria team and government institutions as preparations gather momentum for the caravan and other related activities in the country.
The visit underscores growing efforts by stakeholders to build partnerships that advance peace, social development and citizen participation, while positioning Nigeria as a strong platform for global conversations on sustainable development and social justice.
