In a significant move to bolster Africa’s renewable energy and industrial transformation, Ambassador Ali Mohamed, Kenya’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, convened a pivotal meeting today in Nairobi with key Italian officials. The delegation included Alex Wachira, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Energy, and Dr. Juma Mukhwana, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Industry from the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry. They engaged with Mr. Lorenzo Ortona, Deputy Coordinator of the Mattei Plan Task Force in the Office of the Prime Minister of Italy.
The discussions centered on advancing the implementation of the Mattei Plan, under which Italy has committed €150 million to support Kenya’s environmental policy priorities. This initiative aims to deepen the strategic partnership between Kenya and Italy, focusing on key areas such as renewable energy generation, industrial park development, data centers, technological innovation, e-mobility, climate-smart agriculture, and clean cooking solutions.
Ambassador Mohamed emphasized the importance of these collaborations in unlocking greater economic opportunities for Africa. He highlighted that the partnership aligns with Kenya’s broader objectives of sustainable development and climate resilience. The Mattei Plan’s support is seen as a critical step towards achieving these goals, fostering a green industrial revolution across the continent.
This engagement underscores Kenya’s proactive role in climate diplomacy and its commitment to fostering international partnerships that drive sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
