NUJ FCT Press Week 2026: Grace Ike, Ndudi Elumelu Rally Media Against Fake News Ahead of 2027 Elections By Raymond Enoch

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, alongside former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, has called on media professionals to take decisive steps against fake news, misinformation and disinformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The call was made during activities marking the NUJ FCT Press Week 2026, where media stakeholders, communication experts and public affairs leaders emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in strengthening democratic governance and national unity.

Speaking at the event, Grace Ike stressed the need for journalists to uphold ethical standards, accuracy and professionalism in news reporting, especially as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections begin to intensify.

She noted that the increasing spread of manipulated content, propaganda and misleading narratives across digital platforms poses a serious threat to electoral credibility, peace and public trust.

Ndudi Elumelu, in his remarks, urged media practitioners to remain committed to truth, fairness and national interest, describing the media as a critical pillar in sustaining democracy and promoting issue-based political engagement.

He warned that unchecked misinformation could inflame tensions, mislead voters and undermine confidence in democratic institutions if not properly addressed by journalists and media organisations.

Participants at the forum also advocated stronger collaboration among the media, civil society groups, regulatory institutions and digital platforms to curb the spread of fake news and ensure credible information dissemination during the electioneering period.

The event further highlighted the need for media literacy and public enlightenment campaigns aimed at helping citizens identify false information and make informed democratic choices.

A major highlight of the NUJ FCT Press Week 2026 was the presentation of awards and recognitions to outstanding media professionals and distinguished personalities, both serving and retired, in appreciation of their contributions to journalism, public service and national development.

The NUJ FCT Press Week 2026 continues with engagements focused on journalism ethics, press freedom, mental health awareness and the evolving role of the media in national development.
