WAHO at 39: Four Decades of Regional Unity Driving Better Health Across West Africa By Raymond Enoch

As the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) marks 39 years of excellent health service to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the regional health institution is being celebrated as one of the strongest pillars of regional integration, having transformed collaboration among Member States in the fight against disease, health emergencies and weak healthcare systems.

Established on 9 July 1987, WAHO has evolved beyond a regional health agency into a strategic institution that continues to shape West Africa’s public health agenda through cooperation, innovation and shared responsibility. For nearly four decades, the organisation has coordinated efforts that have strengthened national health systems while promoting the vision that quality healthcare should be accessible to every citizen across the ECOWAS region.

Its journey reflects the broader ambition of ECOWAS—to build a united West Africa where countries work together to solve common challenges. Through harmonised health policies, coordinated disease surveillance, regional training programmes and emergency response mechanisms, WAHO has demonstrated that health security is most effective when pursued collectively.

The organisation has played a leading role in supporting Member States during some of the region’s most difficult public health crises, including disease outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies. By fostering collaboration among governments, health institutions, development partners and research organisations, WAHO has helped improve preparedness and strengthened the resilience of national healthcare systems.

Beyond emergency response, WAHO has consistently championed maternal and child health, reproductive health, immunisation, pharmaceutical regulation, digital health innovation and the fight against communicable and non-communicable diseases. These interventions have contributed significantly to improving health outcomes across West Africa while reinforcing the principles of regional solidarity.

Health experts say WAHO’s greatest achievement lies not only in the programmes it implements but also in its ability to unite the region around common health priorities. Its work has encouraged Member States to share knowledge, pool expertise and develop coordinated solutions to challenges that transcend national borders.

As West Africa faces emerging health threats linked to climate change, rapid urbanisation and population growth, WAHO’s strategic importance continues to grow. The organisation is increasingly positioned as a catalyst for stronger regional health governance, expanded research collaboration, digital transformation and sustainable investment in resilient healthcare systems.

The 39th anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on decades of progress while renewing commitments to universal health coverage, stronger regional institutions and equitable access to quality healthcare for more than 400 million people across the ECOWAS community.

The milestone also underscores the enduring value of regional integration as a practical tool for improving lives. Through collaboration, solidarity and collective action, WAHO has continued to demonstrate that the health of one nation is closely connected to the health of the entire region.

As it celebrates 39 years of commitment, integration and collective action, WAHO remains firmly focused on its mission of promoting better health through regional integration, reaffirming its place as one of ECOWAS’ most impactful institutions and a driving force for a healthier, more resilient and prosperous West Africa.
