Vietnam Seeks Stronger Economic Partnership with ECOWAS By Raymond Enoch
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, has reaffirmed the regional institution’s commitment to deepening economic and development cooperation with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, as he received a high-level Vietnamese delegation on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation, led by Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Le Anh Tuan, visited the ECOWAS Commission to strengthen bilateral engagement and explore new areas of cooperation in food security, trade, investment and other strategic sectors capable of accelerating socio-economic development across West Africa.
At the meeting, Dr. Touray underscored ECOWAS’ readiness to build a stronger and more productive partnership with Vietnam, anchored on mutual respect, shared prosperity and common development goals.
The discussions centred on expanding commercial ties, promoting investment flows, enhancing agricultural cooperation to improve food security and advancing bilateral agreements that will create new opportunities for businesses and citizens in both regions.
The ECOWAS Commission noted that the engagement reflects a shared resolve to move beyond diplomatic exchanges towards concrete initiatives that will deliver measurable economic benefits and strengthen South-South cooperation.
For his part, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to broadening its relationship with ECOWAS, expressing optimism that the renewed engagement would open fresh avenues for collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing confidence that the strengthened partnership would foster increased trade, investment and sustainable development, while reinforcing the growing strategic relationship between West Africa and Vietnam.
