May Day 2026: NUJ FCT Chairman Grace Ike, Demands Urgent Action on Insecurity, Poverty By Raymond Enoch

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called for decisive and sustained action to tackle insecurity and poverty, describing both challenges as major threats to workers’ welfare and national development.

In a statement marking the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration, Ike said this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” reflects the harsh realities faced by workers, especially journalists, across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the country at large.

She noted that journalists in Abuja operate under difficult conditions, often risking their safety to report the truth and hold authorities accountable. Despite these challenges, she commended media professionals for their courage and commitment to ethical journalism.

“Insecurity continues to endanger lives and limit access to information, making it harder for journalists to perform their duties effectively,” she said. “At the same time, rising poverty and economic hardship are affecting the morale and well-being of workers.”

The NUJ chairman stressed that the situation requires urgent attention from government at all levels. She urged authorities to strengthen security measures and implement policies that directly improve the economic conditions of citizens.

According to her, creating a safe working environment and expanding economic opportunities are key steps toward ensuring decent work for Nigerians.

Ike also called on media organisations in the FCT to do more for their employees. She highlighted the need for better salaries, improved working conditions, insurance coverage, and opportunities for professional growth.

“The welfare of journalists must be taken seriously. When workers are protected and motivated, they can contribute more meaningfully to national development,” she said.

She further encouraged members of the NUJ to remain united and continue advocating for their rights, safety, and dignity. Emphasising the importance of solidarity, she urged journalists to stay committed to professionalism and use their platforms to spotlight issues affecting society.

“As a union, we must stand together and keep pushing for accountability and excellence,” she added.

Ike also used the occasion to encourage workers across the FCT not to lose hope despite current challenges. She said resilience and collective effort are essential in building a more secure and prosperous society.

“Through dedication and purposeful engagement, we can help shape a better future for all,” she said.

She concluded by wishing journalists and workers in the FCT a safe and reflective May Day celebration, reaffirming the NUJ’s commitment to defending the interests of its members.
