ECOWAS Commission Weighs Urgent Humanitarian Intervention as Delegation Meets Detained Migrants, by Libyan Authorities By Raymond Enoch
The Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS) has intensified efforts to address the worsening humanitarian situation of stranded West African migrants in Libya following the conclusion of a high-level assessment mission aimed at shaping urgent regional interventions.
The week-long mission, conducted from June 8 to 13, 2026, forms part of a broader ECOWAS initiative to evaluate the conditions of migrants stranded across the Maghreb region, particularly in Libya, Algeria and Tunisia, in line with directives issued by the regional bloc’s Heads of State and Government.
Led by Usman Obeche, Head of Delegation, the ECOWAS team engaged with Libyan authorities, humanitarian agencies and African diplomatic missions to obtain firsthand information on the challenges confronting thousands of migrants, many of whom face detention, abuse and uncertain prospects.
A major highlight of the mission was a visit to the Tajoura Detention Centre in Tripoli, where the delegation interacted directly with detained migrants of ECOWAS origin to assess their humanitarian needs.
The delegation also held consultations with the International Organization for Migration mission in Libya, African diplomatic missions and organised migrant community leaders to identify practical measures for improving protection, voluntary return and reintegration support.
The Libya assessment is the first of three planned ECOWAS humanitarian missions to countries in the Maghreb region following concerns over the growing number of West African migrants stranded along irregular migration routes.
Findings from the mission are expected to guide recommendations for immediate humanitarian action and strengthen regional cooperation aimed at protecting the rights, dignity and welfare of ECOWAS citizens caught in migration crises.
The Commission says the initiative underscores its commitment to ensuring that vulnerable West African migrants receive the protection and assistance they deserve while advancing long-term solutions to irregular migration across the region.
