ECOWAS Boosts Benin’s Sanitation Drive with Equipment Support By Raymond Enoch

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strengthened Benin’s waste management efforts with the official handover of sanitation equipment to the country’s Ministry of Living Environment and Transport in Cotonou.

The equipment was presented by Amadou Diongue during a ceremony held at the logistics base of the Waste Management and Sanitation Company (SGDS-SA) in Akpakpa PK3. The event was attended by José Didier Tonato, officials of the environment ministry, SGDS-SA, and representatives of the ECOWAS Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food.

The donation, facilitated through the Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture of the Economic Community of West African States, includes 20 tricycles, 200 wheelbarrows, 200 shovels and 400 rakes. The equipment is expected to improve waste collection operations and support ongoing sanitation programmes across communities in Benin.

Speaking at the handover, ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to promoting public health and environmental sustainability in member states. The support is aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of agencies responsible for primary and secondary solid waste collection, helping to create cleaner and healthier communities.

The initiative reflects ECOWAS’ broader efforts to support practical solutions to environmental challenges while advancing sustainable development goals across the West African region.
