The 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, was marked with resounding success, as members of the pen profession converged in unity and celebration to reaffirm their commitment to journalism, professionalism, and national development.

In a heartfelt message of appreciation, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, expressed profound gratitude to all members, stakeholders, and partners who contributed to the memorable week-long celebration. She commended the spirit of togetherness that defined the 2025 Press Week, saying it showcased the resilience and vibrancy of the journalism profession in Nigeria’s capital.

“Your enthusiasm, dedication, and unity have been the driving force behind the success of this event,” she said. “From my Executive Committee to the Press Week Committee, chapel leaders, veterans, and all attending members—your efforts have proven that the NUJ FCT is stronger together.”

Particularly praised was the Press Week Committee, chaired by veteran broadcaster Rt. Evelyn Onyilo, for executing a flawlessly organized program that reflected journalistic excellence and integrity. Comrade Ike also acknowledged the input of past chairmen of the NUJ FCT Council, whose legacies continue to guide and inspire.

Veteran journalists and chapel leaders were recognized for their tireless work in mobilizing members and sustaining the ideals of a free and fair press. Numerous events, including lectures, workshops, and awards, underscored the union’s push for stronger press freedom and institutional reforms in media practice.

In a related development, Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja was hailed as a “true friend of the Nigerian press” for generously hosting the 2025 NUJ Annual Lecture and Awards ceremony. Held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the prestigious Borno-Rivers Hall, the event gathered top journalists, policymakers, media executives, and civil society leaders from across the nation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Comrade Grace Ike praised the 5-star hotel’s consistent support for journalism, free speech, and national dialogue.

“Transcorp Hilton Abuja has shown once again that they are more than just a hospitality brand—they are allies in our fight for truth, democracy, and professional excellence,” she stated.

This year’s annual lecture, themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Media, Press Freedom, Democracy and Society,” featured keynote addresses from top government officials and thought leaders, including Arc Ahmed Dangiwa, Minister of Housing; Sen. Tanko Al-Makura, former Nasarawa State Governor and UBEC Chairman; Rt. Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, Chairman, House Committee on FCT; and Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The ceremony also honored individuals and institutions that have championed press freedom, gender equality, and good governance. Notably, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who served as the Guest Speaker, was recognized for her contribution to gender inclusiveness in leadership.

In response, Mr. Ifeanyi Nnadi, Assistant Public Relations and Marketing Manager of Transcorp Hilton Abuja, reaffirmed the hotel’s enduring commitment to the Nigerian media, describing journalists as “partners in progress.”

“We are honored to host the NUJ,” Nnadi said. “We believe in supporting platforms that promote meaningful conversations and drive national development.”

Echoing his remarks, Ms. Ijeoma Osuji, e-Commerce Manager of the hotel, emphasized the importance of the media in shaping public opinion and strengthening democracy.

“The media is indispensable to societal growth, and Transcorp Hilton Abuja is proud to support the platforms that elevate national discourse,” she said.

Journalists who attended the event praised the hotel’s generosity and hospitality. Mr. Odita Sunday, a correspondent with The Guardian, remarked: “Transcorp Hilton Abuja has proven to be a true friend of the Nigerian press. Journalists never forget those who stand by them.”

Similarly, Comrade Ndambabo, Vice Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, described the hotel’s contribution as “a powerful gesture that strengthens the profession and affirms the private sector’s role in national development.”

As the curtain draws on the 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week, the resounding message remains clear: Journalism in Nigeria is alive, resilient, and ready to shape the future.
