In a strategic move to groom the next generation of ethical and professional journalists, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has announced plans to revive and strengthen press clubs in secondary schools across Abuja.
Speaking during an interactive session at Government Secondary School (GSS), Garki, the NUJ FCT Vice Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndababo, who represented the council, emphasized the importance of nurturing journalistic values from an early age.
“Our goal is to promote professionalism from the grassroots by equipping students with essential journalistic skills and ethical standards,” he stated.
The initiative will officially launch on Thursday, 24th July 2025, starting with two pilot schools, marking a significant milestone in youth media education.
Yahaya described the project as part of the union’s broader effort to raise a new generation committed to upholding the principles of ethical journalism.
Matron of the GSS Garki Press Club, Mrs. Udofia Emauwa Unyime, praised the initiative, calling it a “timely and visionary effort” that will spark students’ interest in journalism and media.
The Press Club Revival Project is a key feature of the 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week, which will include a series of activities focused on press freedom, media development, and civic responsibility. The overarching goal is to foster a grassroots journalism culture across the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
This year’s Press Week is themed: “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy, and Society.”
