Bridging Borders for Peace in Africa ,ECOWAS and AU Deepen Security Talks in Addis Ababa. By Raymond Enoch
In a strong demonstration of continental solidarity and strategic diplomacy, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at the Ambassadorial Level held a pivotal courtesy meeting with the leadership of the African Union Commission.
The visit formed part of the 2nd Joint Consultative Forum between ECOWAS and the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), aimed at fostering deeper coordination in addressing Africa’s pressing peace and security challenges.
Leading the ECOWAS delegation was His Excellency Ambassador Musa Sani Nuhu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS and Chairperson of the MSC at the Ambassadorial Level. The delegation was warmly welcomed at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa by Her Excellency Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
During the engagement, H.E. Haddadi emphasized the importance of cross-regional collaboration in navigating the continent’s evolving security landscape. “Now, more than ever, Africa’s stability depends on the strength of its regional partnerships,” she stated, underlining the shared responsibility in responding to complex threats such as terrorism, political instability, and transnational crime.
The consultative forum and courtesy visit come at a critical time, as Africa grapples with overlapping security challenges that demand a unified, coordinated response from its regional and continental institutions.
Ambassador Nuhu reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to strengthening institutional ties with the African Union, noting that the synergy between both entities is vital for effective conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and regional development. “It is through continued dialogue and shared vision that we can chart a path towards a safer, more stable Africa,” he said.
The meeting concluded with a mutual call for sustained consultations, joint initiatives, and the harmonization of peace and security mechanisms across the continent.
As global eyes turn toward Africa’s diplomatic strides, this high-level interaction signals a renewed era of intra-African collaboration—one grounded in trust, mutual respect, and a collective mission to secure the future of the continent.
