As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, former National President of the Union, has sent a heartfelt letter to the Union National President Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi celebrating its milestone. With the Union having celebrated its founding on March 15, 2025, Isiguzo extended a warm congratulations to the current leadership, the National Executive Council, and all members of the Union.
In his letter, Isiguzo lauded the NUJ for its unwavering resilience in defending press freedom, promoting professional ethics, and advocating for journalists’ welfare. Reflecting on the Union’s rich history, he acknowledged its critical role in shaping Nigeria’s media landscape since its establishment in 1955, especially in the face of political and economic adversities.
“Over the decades, the NUJ has been the pillar of press freedom, fighting for the rights and safety of journalists even when the odds were stacked against us,” Isiguzo stated. His tenure as National President of the Union, spanning six impactful years, was marked by significant strides in improving working conditions for journalists and championing ethical standards within the profession.
Under his leadership, the NUJ experienced tremendous growth, navigating both challenges and triumphs. From expanding its influence in national discourse to enhancing its international standing, Isiguzo praised the Union’s continuous advocacy, ensuring that journalists’ rights remain protected.
Today, as the Union celebrates 70 years of remarkable achievements, Isiguzo expressed optimism for the future, particularly with the current leadership of Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdulahi. “I am confident that the next 70 years will bring even greater accomplishments for the NUJ,” he said, acknowledging the new challenges ahead. Isiguzo also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Union’s efforts in advancing the profession and safeguarding its core values.
The former NUJ President, now leading the Congress of African Journalists, emphasized the global importance of the Union’s work. He noted that the NUJ’s role in upholding justice and press freedom, particularly in difficult environments, has earned it recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders. “The NUJ has built a solid reputation both locally and internationally, defending the rights of journalists across the globe,” he remarked.
As the Union embarks on the next chapter of its journey, Isiguzo urged all members to take pride in the collective achievements that have brought the NUJ to this historic moment. He expressed his hope that the legacy of the Union would not only be preserved but expanded, ensuring that future generations of journalists will continue to benefit from the sacrifices of those who came before them.
Dr siguzo’s letter serves as both a celebration of the Union’s past and a call to action for its future. As the NUJ stands at the threshold of its next 70 years, it does so with the knowledge that its foundation is built on resilience, advocacy, and a deep commitment to press freedom—principles that will continue to guide its work for decades to come.
