The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) President, Alhassan Yahya, has called for unity among journalists to transform the media landscape, emphasizing the need for better remuneration and legal protections.

Speaking at a reception in Abuja to honor immediate past NUJ President Chris Isiguzo, Yahya announced plans to draft a Media Enhancement Bill with input from key stakeholders, including the Guild of Editors, International Press Institute (IPI), and NGOs. The bill, aimed at ensuring journalists’ welfare and protection, has gained support from members of the National Assembly.

“We have identified lawmakers willing to sponsor this bill. With collective effort, we will change the narrative,” Yahya stated.

Reflecting on his tenure, Isiguzo praised Yahya’s leadership and expressed optimism about the new bill’s success. “We failed in the past because we worked in isolation, but this time, media stakeholders are united behind the initiative,” he noted.

Stakeholders, including NUJ Vice Presidents , NUJ FCT Council Chairperson and NAWOJ leaders, commended Isiguzo for his contributions, describing him as a visionary leader.

The event was attended by prominent figures in journalism and civil society, all celebrating Isiguzo’s legacy and endorsing Yahya’s vision for media reforms.
