TCN Boosts Power Supply in Yobe with New 60MVA Mobile Transformer Commissioned, Enhances Grid Reliability By Raymond Enoch

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has taken another significant step toward strengthening electricity transmission in the North-East with the successful commissioning of a new 60MVA, 132/33kV Mobile Power Transformer at its Damaturu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Yobe State.

The transformer, which was successfully energized and put into operation at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, increases the substation’s installed transformation capacity from 120MVA to 180MVA, marking a major milestone in TCN’s drive to reinforce Nigeria’s national transmission network.

The newly commissioned facility is expected to improve the reliability, flexibility and resilience of power supply by providing operational redundancy during routine maintenance and unforeseen outages, while also positioning the substation to accommodate growing electricity demand across the state.

With the increased capacity, more bulk electricity is now available for evacuation to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) for onward distribution to consumers in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Babangida, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, and several neighbouring communities.

The development is anticipated to improve service delivery, reduce supply constraints and support socio-economic activities in one of Nigeria’s strategic North-East states, where reliable electricity remains critical to economic growth, healthcare delivery, education and small-scale enterprises.

The project forms part of TCN’s ongoing Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)-funded transmission expansion programme, which is focused on upgrading critical infrastructure across the country to improve the efficiency, stability and reliability of bulk power transmission.

Industry observers say the commissioning reflects TCN’s sustained investment in modern transmission facilities designed to strengthen the national grid, improve operational efficiency and support the Federal Government’s broader objective of delivering more reliable electricity to Nigerians.

As electricity demand continues to rise nationwide, the Damaturu transformer project represents another strategic intervention expected to enhance grid performance and ensure more stable power supply for businesses, institutions and households across Yobe State.
