TCN, NSCDC Strengthen Partnership Against Power Infrastructure Vandalism in Katsina By Raymond Enoch

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have strengthened their partnership in Katsina State to combat the rising threat of power infrastructure vandalism and Right-of-Way (RoW) encroachment, in a renewed effort to safeguard critical national assets and ensure uninterrupted electricity transmission.

The renewed collaboration follows fresh incidents of vandalism on the Katsina–Daura 132kV transmission line, where Towers T-219 and T-228 were damaged by suspected vandals, highlighting the growing security challenges confronting the nation’s transmission network.

The commitment was reinforced during a courtesy visit by TCN’s Katsina Sub-Region management, led by the Assistant General Manager (Transmission), Engr. Usman S. Idris, to the NSCDC Katsina State Command on July 6, 2026.

Speaking during the meeting, Engr. Idris commended the NSCDC for its swift response to previous security alerts involving transmission facilities and emphasized the need for sustained collaboration to secure strategic electricity infrastructure across the state.

He disclosed that the vandalism of Towers T-219 and T-228 was uncovered during a routine patrol, describing the attacks as part of a worrying trend capable of undermining the integrity of the national transmission network.

According to him, vandalism and illegal encroachment on transmission Right-of-Way not only threaten the stability of electricity supply but also impose significant financial and operational costs on the power sector.

He stressed that protecting transmission infrastructure requires stronger synergy among security agencies, host communities and TCN, noting that proactive surveillance, intelligence sharing and rapid response remain essential to deterring criminal activities.

Responding, the Katsina State Commandant of the NSCDC, Abbas Dan-Ile Moriki, revealed that investigations into the reported vandalism had already commenced.

He assured TCN of the Corps’ unwavering commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and pledged enhanced operational collaboration to tackle vandalism and Right-of-Way encroachment through intelligence-driven security operations and preventive measures.

Both organisations also agreed to deepen information sharing and strengthen joint strategies aimed at protecting transmission assets from sabotage and other criminal activities.

The renewed partnership underscores TCN’s determination to work closely with security agencies in safeguarding Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure, reducing outages caused by vandalism and supporting the delivery of a more reliable electricity supply nationwide.
