Catholic Lawyers Focus on Electoral Democracy as Abuja Chapter Rolled Out 2026 Law Week Activities By Raymond Enoch
As conversations surrounding Nigeria’s democratic future continue to dominate national discourse, the National Association of Catholic Lawyers (NACL), Abuja Chapter, has announced an action-packed programme for its 2026 Law Week, with a strong focus on strengthening electoral democracy and promoting justice.
The week-long event, scheduled to hold from June 22 to 28, 2026, is themed “Electoral Democracy in Nigeria and the 2026 Electoral Act,” a timely subject expected to stimulate robust discussions on electoral integrity, the rule of law and democratic governance ahead of future elections.
The highlight of the week will be the prestigious St. Thomas More Public Lecture on Wednesday, June 24, at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Central Business District, Abuja, where distinguished legal practitioner Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, FCIArb, will serve as the Guest Speaker. The lecture is expected to bring together senior lawyers, judges, policymakers, public officials, academics and members of the legal profession to examine the implications of the 2026 Electoral Act and chart pathways toward credible and transparent elections.
Beyond intellectual engagement, the Law Week reflects the association’s commitment to faith-driven service and community impact.
Activities will commence on Monday, June 22, with an Opening Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, setting the spiritual tone for the week.
On Tuesday, June 23, members will embark on a humanitarian outreach to Kubwa General Hospital, reinforcing the association’s dedication to compassion and service beyond the courtroom.
The social aspect of the celebration will feature a Dinner Night at Sandralia Hotel, Utako, on Friday, June 26, providing an opportunity for networking, fellowship and professional interaction among members and invited guests.
The programme also promotes healthy living with an Aerobics Session at the Old Parade Ground, Mohammed Buhari Way, Garki, on Saturday, June 27, before rounding off with a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Mabushi, on Sunday, June 28.
Organisers say the carefully designed programme reflects the association’s mission of combining professional excellence with Christian values, civic responsibility and national development.
Anchored on the biblical injunction, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34), the 2026 Law Week is expected to provide a strategic platform for meaningful dialogue on electoral reforms while inspiring legal practitioners to uphold justice, fairness and ethical leadership.
With democracy facing evolving challenges, the National Association of Catholic Lawyers believes the gathering will not only shape legal discourse but also contribute significantly to building a more accountable, transparent and inclusive electoral system for Nigeria.
