Nigeria Deepens West African Diplomacy as New Envoy Begins Mission in Côte d’Ivoire, Pledges Stronger Bilateral ties, By Raymond Enoch
Nigeria has taken another significant step in strengthening its diplomatic presence in West Africa as its newly appointed Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ezenwa Chukwuemeka Nwaobiala, formally presented his Letters of Credence to Alassane Ouattara, officially commencing his diplomatic assignment in the francophone nation.
According to a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the presentation of the Letters of Credence reinforces the growing diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire and reflects both countries’ shared commitment to promoting peace, stability and shared prosperity across the West African sub-region.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan on June 18, marked the formal recognition of Ambassador Nwaobiala as Nigeria’s representative to Côte d’Ivoire following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during the presentation, Ambassador Nwaobiala conveyed President Tinubu’s warm greetings to President Ouattara and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding the longstanding friendship and strategic cooperation between both countries. He stressed that Abuja remains committed to deepening bilateral relations in ways that would promote regional stability, economic growth and closer integration across West Africa.
President Ouattara welcomed the Nigerian envoy and pledged his government’s readiness to work closely with him in advancing cooperation in key sectors of mutual interest. He described relations between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire as cordial and expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to flourish, particularly within the framework of regional integration and sustainable economic development.
Diplomatic observers view the ambassador’s assumption of office as a timely boost to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, especially as West African nations seek stronger collaboration to address regional security, trade and development challenges.
At a reception organised in his honour with members of the Nigerian community in Abidjan, Ambassador Nwaobiala described Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire as nations united not only by geography but also by history, shared aspirations and a common commitment to African unity and prosperity.
He thanked President Tinubu and the leadership of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the confidence reposed in him, promising to discharge his duties with humility, dedication and determination while advancing Nigeria’s national interests and strengthening the enduring friendship between both countries.
The envoy also pledged to promote greater understanding, mutual respect and productive collaboration between Nigerians and Ivorians, urging nations across the world to build bridges of cooperation rather than walls of division.
