Democracy Day: FRSC Boss Warns Against Reckless Driving, Says ‘No Celebration Is Worth a Single Life’ By Raymond Enoch
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has called on Nigerians to celebrate the 2026 Democracy Day responsibly, warning that reckless driving and traffic violations could turn moments of joy into tragedy.
In a goodwill message to mark the nation’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the FRSC boss urged motorists, passengers and other road users to make safety a personal responsibility throughout the holiday period.
Mohammed noted that Democracy Day celebrations typically witness a significant increase in vehicular and human movement across the country as citizens travel to reunite with family members, friends and loved ones. According to him, the resulting traffic surge often leads to heightened risks associated with speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, driving against traffic and other unsafe road practices.
While acknowledging that Nigerians have every reason to celebrate the country’s democratic progress, he stressed that such celebrations must be conducted with caution and respect for human life.
“No celebration is worth a single life. The true essence of Democracy Day can only be enjoyed when citizens return safely to their homes and loved ones. We must therefore reject all forms of reckless driving and embrace a culture of patience, discipline and consideration on our roads,” he said.
The Corps Marshal advised motorists to strictly obey traffic regulations, avoid excessive speed, shun driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and desist from any behaviour capable of endangering lives. He also encouraged passengers to speak out whenever drivers engage in unsafe practices.
He emphasized that road safety remains a collective responsibility, noting that every road user has a role to play in protecting lives and preventing crashes.
“As we celebrate 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, let us equally demonstrate our commitment to protecting lives through responsible road use. Let us make safety our watchword and ensure that every journey ends in peace,” Mohammed added.
The FRSC chief further reassured Nigerians that the Corps has intensified strategic patrol operations, traffic management activities and emergency response services nationwide to ensure safer roads during the Democracy Day celebrations and beyond.
Congratulating citizens on the Democracy Day milestone, Mohammed wished Nigerians a peaceful, memorable and crash-free celebration, stressing that the greatest achievement of any festivity is returning home safely.
The message was conveyed in a statement signed by the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, at the Corps Headquarters in Abuja on June 12, 2026.
