Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu Takes Charge at Foreign Affairs Ministry, Vows to Deepen Nigeria’s 4D Diplomacy Agenda By Raymond Enoch
Nigeria’s foreign policy landscape witnessed a significant transition on Friday as Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu officially assumed duty as the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, pledging to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic influence and advance the Federal Government’s 4D Foreign Policy agenda on the global stage.
The new Foreign Affairs Minister arrived at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja to a warm reception led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, alongside senior directors and heads of agencies under the Ministry.
Her assumption of office follows her elevation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Minister of State for Foreign Affairs to the substantive Minister, a development widely seen as a strategic move to consolidate Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements amid evolving regional and global dynamics.
Among those present to receive the Minister were Directors-General and representatives of key agencies under the Ministry, including the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, the Technical Aid Corps, and the Foreign Service Academy.
Speaking during the reception ceremony, Ambassador Ahmed described the Minister’s appointment as a recognition of her commitment, professionalism, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives over the years.
He noted that Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu had already demonstrated competence and strategic leadership during her tenure as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, expressing confidence that her new role would further strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic reach and international partnerships.
The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry’s staff to support the Minister in driving the administration’s foreign policy priorities, particularly in areas of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, protection of Nigerians abroad, economic diplomacy, peacebuilding, and national development.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by representatives of agencies under the Ministry as well as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Olawale Emmanuel Awe, who pledged cooperation and institutional support toward the success of the Minister’s tenure.
In her address, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed her resolve to build on the achievements recorded by the Ministry under the administration of President Tinubu.
She emphasized that the Federal Government remains committed to implementing Nigeria’s 4D Foreign Policy framework, anchored on Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography, while stressing that citizen diplomacy and strategic autonomy would remain central to Nigeria’s engagement with the international community.
The Minister stated that professionalism, innovation, institutional efficiency, and unity of purpose would be critical in confronting emerging global challenges and safeguarding Nigeria’s strategic interests at regional, continental, and international levels.
She also paid tribute to officers and staff of the Ministry for their dedication and sacrifices in advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic objectives, assuring them of her commitment to staff welfare and improved service delivery.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu pledged to work closely with the Permanent Secretary, management team, and agencies under the Ministry to ensure effective implementation of Nigeria’s foreign policy goals and stronger protection for Nigerians living abroad.
Her assumption of office comes at a period when Nigeria is seeking stronger economic partnerships, enhanced regional cooperation, and greater influence within continental and global institutions. Political observers believe her diplomatic experience and international exposure could play a pivotal role in repositioning Nigeria’s foreign relations strategy in line with the Tinubu administration’s broader economic and security agenda.
The event underscored renewed optimism within the Ministry as stakeholders expressed confidence that the new Minister’s leadership would further elevate Nigeria’s voice in international affairs while strengthening ties with strategic allies across Africa and beyond.
