The European Union (EU) has announced the launch of two major humanitarian and development initiatives totaling €15 million, aimed at supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their host communities across five key states in Nigeria. This state are Yobe, Adamawa, Benue, Kano, and Sokoto.

The programmes – EU Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Yobe, Adamawa, Benue, and Kano States (SIDPIN), and the EU Support for Protection, Assistance and Durable Solutions in Sokoto (SPADS) – are part of a comprehensive EU strategy to enhance dignity, promote local integration, and build long-term resilience for Nigeria’s displaced populations.

In partnership with federal and state governments, the United Nations, and the Danish Refugee Council (Dansk Flygtningehjælp), the EU aims to address both the immediate humanitarian needs and the longer-term development challenges faced by displaced Nigerians, especially in urban and urbanising areas.

“Through SIDPIN and SPADS, we aim to restore dignity and create durable solutions that bring hope for a more secure and inclusive future,” said an EU spokesperson.

The interventions will focus heavily on women and children, ensuring access to essential services such as education, healthcare, psychosocial support, and livelihood opportunities. Local integration will be prioritised, enabling IDPs to settle and thrive within host communities instead of remaining in camps or informal settlements.

These efforts come at a time when protracted displacement—driven by conflict, climate change, and insecurity—continues to affect millions across northern Nigeria. By targeting Yobe, Adamawa, Benue, Kano, and Sokoto, the EU is addressing regions with some of the highest IDP concentrations and most pressing humanitarian needs.

The €15 million initiative is expected to positively impact thousands of displaced individuals and host community members, helping lay the foundation for stability, social cohesion, and inclusive development in the affected states.
