The National Committee for Family Farming (NCFF) held a significant meeting on thursday at the NUJ FCT Council Press Center in Utako, Abuja, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing food and nutrition security in Nigeria. The event, themed “Advancing Sustainable Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Security Through Family Farming for a Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigeria,” was chaired by Mr. Raymond Enoch, the National Coordinator of NCFF Nigeria.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Enoch emphasized the importance of family farming, defining it as agricultural activities managed and operated by families, relying predominantly on family labor. He highlighted the multifaceted role of family farming in combining economic, environmental, social, and cultural functions for food production and consumption.

The congress aimed to broaden the national conversation on the seven pillars of the Global Action Plan (GAP) of the United Nations Decade for Family Farming (UNDFF 2019-2028). These pillars include developing an enabling policy environment, ensuring youth and generational sustainability, promoting gender equity and women’s leadership, strengthening family farmers’ organizations, improving socio-economic inclusion and resilience, promoting sustainability for climate-resilient food systems, and enhancing the multidimensionality of family farming.

Mr. Enoch outlined the NCFF Nigeria’s strategic initiatives towards developing a National Action Plan (NAP) for Family Farming, in line with the UNDFF’s objectives. He announced that NCFF Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to galvanize stakeholders for this purpose. Discussions are ongoing with key partners, including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), to streamline efforts towards achieving this goal.

The meeting called on various actors in the agricultural sector, including private sector players, farmers’ organizations, women, and youth, to join hands with NCFF Nigeria in advancing sustainable agricultural practices through family farming initiatives. This collaboration aims to bolster food security, transform the agricultural sector, and contribute to the government’s renewed hope agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The congress ended with a call to action for all relevant stakeholders to mobilize resources and align their efforts towards building a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food system in Nigeria.
