Togo Enters Fifth Republic as President Gnassingbé Unveils New Governance Vision By Raymond Enoch

President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has formally set the tone for Togo’s political transition into the Fifth Republic, outlining a far-reaching governance agenda anchored on security, national unity, and accelerated development.

Addressing the National Assembly in a State of the Nation speech, the Togolese leader described the moment as historic, noting that the country is resolutely embracing a modern and balanced parliamentary system that reflects the will of the people. He said the shift marks a decisive step toward strengthening democratic institutions and deepening citizen participation in governance.

At the heart of the President’s address were three major priorities that will guide government action in the new republic. First, he emphasized the protection of Togo and its citizens through the consolidation of security, stability, and national resilience, particularly in a regional context marked by growing security challenges.
Secondly, President Gnassingbé underscored the need to strengthen national cohesion by fostering unity, deepening decentralization, and ensuring equity across all regions of the country. He stressed that balanced territorial development remains essential to building a strong and inclusive nation.
The third pillar of the government’s agenda focuses on transformation—accelerating economic and social development, modernizing public services, and placing inclusion and social justice at the center of the republican contract.

According to the President, development must be people-centered and measurable in its impact on citizens’ daily lives.
Beyond policy priorities, the Head of State reaffirmed a renewed method of governance based on clarity of commitments, accountability, exemplary leadership, and a strong culture of results. He pledged close collaboration with Parliament, grounded in mutual respect for institutional prerogatives, to build a republic that is more just, forward-looking, and responsive to the aspirations of the Togolese people.

President Gnassingbé concluded his address with a call for unity and collective responsibility as the country charts its course in the Fifth Republic.
“Long live the Republic. Long live Togo,” he declared.
