Tell the Truth, Unite Nigeria!” — Defence Chief Sends Strong Easter Message to Journalists By Raymond Enoch
In a stirring Easter message marked by hope, reflection, and a call to action, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has urged journalists across the country to uphold truth and professionalism, describing the media as vital to national unity and security.
Represented at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, the defence chief emphasised that Nigeria’s pursuit of peace and stability extends beyond military operations to the critical role of information management and dissemination.
He reassured Nigerians that despite persistent security challenges, including terrorism and banditry, the Armed Forces remain resilient, focused, and committed to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. Drawing from the symbolism of Easter, he noted that the message of resurrection offers a powerful reminder that difficult seasons are temporary and renewal is inevitable.
> “Nigeria is facing serious challenges, but we are resilient. With faith and unity, renewal will come,” he stated.
Oluyede highlighted the evolving nature of modern conflict, noting that battles are no longer fought solely with weapons but also through narratives and information. He cautioned that irresponsible or misleading reportage could fuel fear, deepen divisions, and undermine national security, whereas accurate and balanced journalism fosters trust and strengthens societal cohesion.
He further called on citizens to actively support security agencies by providing credible information, while paying tribute to fallen heroes and urging prayers for personnel still serving on the frontlines.
Also lending his voice, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, underscored the indispensable role of ethical journalism in nation-building. He noted that responsible reporting promotes transparency, combats corruption, and holds leadership accountable.

Earlier, the Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, encouraged journalists to use the Easter season as a period of introspection and renewed commitment to integrity, professionalism, and excellence.
Acknowledging the increasing pressures faced by media practitioners, Ike urged them to remain steadfast, noting that journalism plays a defining role in shaping public discourse and strengthening democratic institutions.
> “Our words matter. Our reports influence decisions. We must remain committed to truth,” he said.
He also called for greater unity within the union, stressing that solidarity remains essential in protecting press freedom and advancing the profession.
The retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security stakeholders, and public officials, all united by a shared conviction: that Nigeria can emerge stronger through truth, unity, and collective responsibility.
