NUJ FCT Chair Grace Ike Honoured as ‘Most Active Journalistic Mobilizer’ at Humanitarian Awards By Raymond Enoch

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has been honoured with the Humanitarian Award for Excellence in Service by the Women of Glory Foundation in recognition of her contributions to humanity, leadership, and national development.

The award was presented during the foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration held in Abuja on Saturday, where Grace Ike was also celebrated as the “Most Active Journalistic Mobilizer” for her role in uniting and inspiring journalists towards advancing public interest and social development.

Receiving the award on her behalf, Sharon Emephia, Assistant Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, described the recognition as an affirmation of the values of service, professionalism, and commitment that the council continues to uphold.

The event brought together women leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, and advocates from across Nigeria to commemorate a decade of humanitarian interventions by the Women of Glory Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering widows, single mothers, elderly women, and other vulnerable groups through mentorship, skills acquisition, healthcare support, and advocacy.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration, the foundation’s founder, Nneka Evelyn Nzewi, recounted the painful experiences that inspired the establishment of the organization.

According to her, the foundation emerged from a childhood marked by hardship following the loss of her father, which left her mother struggling to raise five children amid severe economic challenges and personal tragedies.

“At a very young age, I lost my father. My mother was suddenly left to raise five children with no support system. I watched her fight every day to survive, to provide, and to keep hope alive when the odds were stacked against her,” she said.

Nzewi explained that witnessing her mother’s resilience inspired a lifelong commitment to supporting vulnerable women, adding that she made a promise to dedicate her life to helping others if she overcame her own difficult circumstances.

Presenting the award, the organizers commended Grace Ike’s exceptional leadership and dedication to mobilizing journalists for national development, describing her as a key figure in promoting responsible journalism and social advocacy.

In a goodwill message delivered by Emephia, the NUJ FCT Chair congratulated the Women of Glory Foundation on reaching a decade of impactful service.

“Ten years of sustained impact is no small achievement. It reflects resilience, vision, and a deep commitment to service. In a time when many initiatives struggle for continuity, your decade-long journey stands as a testament to purpose-driven leadership,” the message stated.

Grace Ike also expressed appreciation to the foundation for the honour, noting that the award represents the collective efforts of journalists working to promote truth, development, and societal progress.

“I receive this honour with gratitude and humility. I see it not just as a personal award but as a reflection of the collective efforts of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council and the values we uphold in promoting truth, development, and societal progress,” she said.

As the Women of Glory Foundation marked its 10th anniversary, its leadership reaffirmed its commitment to expanding humanitarian interventions and empowering more women across Nigeria, while thanking supporters and partners who have contributed to the organization’s decade-long journey of impact.

The foundation currently operates across Nigeria’s 36 states, focusing on advocacy, empowerment, and awareness campaigns on issues affecting women, children, health, and community development.
