In a statement made available to the press, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Catholics across the world on the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as the new Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

The statement, released by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, described the election as a “momentous and historic occasion,” expressing Nigeria’s joy and solidarity with the global Catholic faithful.

“Nigeria rejoices with the global Catholic community on this significant milestone,” the Minister said, “and prays for divine wisdom, strength, and guidance for Pope Leo XIV as he assumes this sacred responsibility.”

The Minister expressed confidence in the new Pope’s ability to lead with compassion, humility, and dedication to peace and unity. He also emphasized the importance of the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the Holy See, noting the country’s sizeable Catholic population and ongoing commitment to interfaith dialogue and social justice.

“As a nation, we look forward to continued collaboration with the Vatican in promoting harmony and the common good of all people,” the statement added.

Ambassador Tuggar concluded by wishing the newly elected Pontiff a papacy blessed with grace and a lasting impact on humanity.
