In a remarkable ground breaking step and pioneering initiative, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter has teamed up with traditional rulers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to address the pressing challenges faced by rural women.

The collaboration, reached on Monday, is aimed at empowering rural women, advocating for their rights, and breaking down barriers related to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

With the theme “Accelerating Action for Gender Equality: The Voice of Rural Women” for this year’s International Women’s Day, NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, highlighted the significance of the partnership in amplifying the voices of rural women who are often sidelined in critical societal discussions.

She stressed the need for immediate action to ensure that rural women are not left behind in the broader pursuit of gender equality and social justice.

Speaking during the partnership exchange, HRM Hajiya Hauwa Ibrahim, the Wife of the Ona of Abaji and President of the Wives of FCT Traditional Rulers Association, emphasized the urgency of addressing gender-based violence in rural communities. “Even within our palaces, we witness many cases of unreported gender-based violence due to cultural barriers. This collaboration with NAWOJ FCT is crucial in driving positive change for women and children in our communities,” she remarked.

This ground breaking partnership marks a crucial step toward making rural women’s voices heard, with the support of the 17 traditional rulers of the FCT. By sharing their stories, advocating for their rights, and uniting with influential leaders, rural women are poised to gain a stronger foothold in their communities and beyond.

Through this relationship, NAWOJ FCT and traditional rulers hope to catalyze meaningful change, ultimately creating a lasting impact on gender equality in the region.
