The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has thrown its weight behind the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a renewed effort to combat the menace of fake number plates across the country.

In a high-level meeting held on Friday, February 7, 2025, in Abuja, the student body pledged to launch a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate its members on the dangers of using unauthorized vehicle registration plates.

Led by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Affairs, Honourable Sunday Ashefon, the NANS delegation—comprising National President Comrade Lucky Omonefe, Senate President Comrade Akintoye Babatunde, and other executive members—met with Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed to solidify their commitment to the initiative.

Speaking at the meeting, Honourable Sunday Ashefon condemned the proliferation of fake number plates, describing it as a major threat to national security and a mockery of Nigeria’s transportation system. He emphasized that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration remains committed to eliminating such unlawful activities, ensuring that individuals do not undermine the FRSC’s efforts in enhancing road safety and security.

“NANS, as a reputable and recognized body, will not allow its name to be associated with any unlawful activity,” Ashefon stated.

Reaffirming NANS’ readiness to collaborate with the FRSC, President Comrade Lucky Omonefe praised the Corps for its dedication to road safety and security. He assured the Corps Marshal that the student body would actively engage its members nationwide to dissuade them from using fake or unauthorized number plates.

“Our leadership is focused, responsible, and committed to meaningful partnerships. We will do everything within our power to enlighten students about the dangers and legal implications of using fake number plates,” Omonefe assured.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed welcomed NANS’ decision to support the FRSC’s special patrol operations against fake number plates. He stressed the importance of public awareness in achieving the Corps’ mandate and lauded the student body for its proactive stance.

“We appreciate the support of NANS and look forward to working together to achieve our common goal of ensuring road safety in Nigeria,” the Corps Marshal said.

With this partnership, NANS will embark on a countrywide sensitization drive to educate students and the general public on the legal and security risks associated with fake number plates. The campaign aims to encourage vehicle owners to obtain genuine registration from authorized dealers, ensuring compliance with national road safety regulations.

As part of the initiative, NANS is set to mobilize students across higher institutions to work closely with FRSC officials in spreading the message and ensuring that law-abiding citizens are not misled into using counterfeit number plates.

This collaboration marks a significant step in the fight against road-related crimes, reinforcing the government’s commitment to national security and the safety of all road users.
