Lagos, Nigeria to Host ECOWAS 50th Anniversary in a Historic Celebration of West African Unity. By Raymond Enoch
In a show of resilience, excellence and a demonstration of courage for the future Lagos Nigeria would on the 28th May, 2025, mark a historic day as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marks its 50th anniversary at the very city where the regional institution was founded in 1975, fifty years ago.
The golden jubilee anniversary will spotlight five decades of ECOWAS’s contributions to regional integration, economic development, and peace building across West Africa.
In a rare appearance, one of the ECOWAS’s surviving founding fathers, former Nigerian Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), will grace the occasion. He will be joined by the current Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with several West African leaders and dignitaries.
Established on May 28, 1975, ECOWAS has grown into a cornerstone of regional cooperation, with achievements in trade liberalization, conflict resolution, democratic governance, and infrastructure development.
This year’s celebration is poised to be both a moment of reflection and a launchpad for the ECOWAS renewed vision toward a more integrated and prosperous West Africa.
