Grace Ike Joins NIPR, Reaffirms Commitment to Ethical Public Communication By Raymond Enoch

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has been inducted into the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), pledging to deepen ethical standards and professionalism in public communication.

The induction, which took place in Abuja, represents a significant step in Ike’s career, expanding her role from journalism into the broader field of strategic communication.

Speaking at the event, Ike said the recognition comes with a heightened responsibility to promote truth, integrity, and accountability in an era increasingly challenged by misinformation and public distrust. She described communication as a critical tool for shaping national discourse and strengthening democratic institutions.

According to her, the transition into public relations complements her long-standing experience in journalism, offering a wider platform to influence narratives, manage public perception, and build trust between institutions and citizens.

“This induction is both an honour and a call to service,” she said. “We must ensure that communication is not only effective but also ethical, responsible, and aligned with the public interest.”

With over two decades in the media industry, Ike has earned recognition for her advocacy in press freedom, professional ethics, and the welfare of journalists. Her leadership as NUJ FCT Chairman has focused on strengthening the credibility and standards of journalism practice.

She stressed that public relations must go beyond image management, emphasising its role in fostering transparency, sustaining credibility, and encouraging meaningful engagement between organisations and the public.

Ike also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of mentorship and inclusion, pledging to support emerging professionals and promote greater participation of women in leadership across the communication sector.

The ceremony attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including media practitioners and communication experts, reflecting the growing importance of public relations in governance and national development.

Her induction, alongside other professionals, underscores the increasing synergy between journalism and public relations as complementary forces in informing, educating, and uniting society.
