GHANCOY 4, Other ESSMGB Receive Medals for Sacrifice and Regional Stability Efforts By Raymond Enoch

The Economic Community of West African States Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB) has honoured troops from Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal with medals of recognition for their commitment to peacekeeping, regional security and political stability in the country.

The colourful combined Medal Presentation Parade, held on May 14, 2026, brought together personnel from the Ghanaian contingent (GHANCOY 4), Nigerian and Senegalese contingents, alongside selected staff officers from the Force Headquarters serving under the regional peace support mission.

The ceremony underscored ECOWAS’ continued resolve to strengthen democratic stability and security cooperation across West Africa, particularly in Guinea-Bissau where the regional bloc has remained actively engaged in stabilisation and peace support operations.

A special delegation attending the Medals Day celebration, as well as a reconnaissance team for GHANCOY 5 from Ghana, was led by Brigadier General Michael Kwami, Director General of Military Records. The delegation joined senior military officers and mission officials in celebrating the troops for their professionalism and dedication to duty.

Speaking during the event, mission officials praised the personnel for their sacrifices, discipline and unwavering commitment in supporting ECOWAS objectives aimed at sustaining peace and constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau.

The medals were presented as a symbol of appreciation for the courage and resilience demonstrated by the troops in carrying out stabilisation responsibilities under often challenging operational conditions.

Sources say that the recognition ceremony further highlights the growing importance of regional military cooperation among ECOWAS member states in addressing security challenges and supporting fragile democracies within the sub-region.

The ESSMGB remains one of ECOWAS’ key interventions designed to reinforce political stability, institutional support and peacebuilding efforts in Guinea-Bissau, while fostering collaboration among member states committed to safeguarding regional peace and security.
