The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has once again underscored its commitment to the United Nations’ global initiative against road traffic crashes, with Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed declaring full support for the objectives outlined in the 2021-2030 Decade of Action for Road Safety.

The declaration was made during a seminar organized by the FRSC at its National Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, March 24, 2025. The event, which focused on reviewing the Marrakech Declaration on Road Safety, brought together key stakeholders from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and road safety advocates.

“We are committed to the success of the goals set by the United Nations in its 2021-2030 road safety campaign,” said Shehu Mohammed. “Nigeria has long been at the forefront of the global movement against road traffic crashes, and the FRSC, as the lead agency in road safety, has played a crucial role in ensuring the implementation of safety measures at both national and global levels.”

The Corps Marshal highlighted Nigeria’s pivotal role in the international effort, recalling that the country was a key participant in the first global road safety conference in Moscow, Russia, in 2009, which set the stage for the United Nations’ declaration of the 2011-2020 Decade of Action for Road Safety. He also reaffirmed that Nigeria, through the FRSC, was one of the earliest adopters of the global campaign, establishing a functional road safety agency long before the international call for such bodies.

“We are proud that Nigeria was among the first countries to activate the global campaign following the UN’s declaration,” Corps Marshal Mohammed noted, emphasizing the FRSC’s ongoing commitment to reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries.

The seminar also saw a special recognition of the significant contributions made by road safety advocates and organizations, including Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, founder of Kwapda’as Road Safety Demand (KRSD) and President of the Court of Appeal. Hon. Dongban-Mensem was praised by the Corps Marshal for her tireless advocacy at the global level, particularly her influential role at the Marrakech Conference, which resulted in the revised road safety framework.

In her address, Justice Dongban-Mensem applauded the FRSC for its unwavering leadership in road safety initiatives and urged other non-governmental organizations to intensify their efforts in promoting safer roads across the country. “Our organization is committed to amplifying road safety advocacy with greater urgency,” she said, emphasizing the critical need for heightened awareness and action in preventing road crashes.

The seminar included expert-led discussions on the progress of the Marrakech Declaration, as well as recommendations for future actions. Additionally, Nigeria’s exceptional contributions to road safety were publicly acknowledged with the presentation of two prestigious awards won by the country for its dedication to the global road safety cause.

The event was attended by prominent figures in road safety, including senior FRSC officials, road safety NGOs, and other stakeholders committed to addressing the growing challenge of traffic-related accidents in Nigeria and beyond.

As Nigeria continues to champion the road safety agenda, the FRSC’s role remains crucial in ensuring that the country contributes meaningfully to the global movement aimed at reducing road fatalities and improving road safety worldwide.
