FRSC Moves to Curb Traffic Violations with Strict Penalty Points System.
By Raymond Enoch
Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC) in a bold move to curb incessant traffic violations and enhance road safety, the Federal Road Safety Corps has activated its penalty points system, a measure aimed at enforcing compliance with traffic regulations across Nigeria.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, announced this initiative as part of a broader strategy to reduce road traffic crashes and ensure safer roads for all Nigerians.
The system assigns penalty points to erring drivers, and upon reaching specific thresholds, offenders face escalating sanctions, including license suspension and eventual revocation.
Under this system, drivers accumulating between 10 and 14 points receive a formal warning, while those with 15 to 20 points face temporary suspension of their driver’s license. Offenders who reach 21 points will have their licenses completely revoked, effectively banning them from driving on Nigerian roads.
Common traffic infractions and their corresponding penalties include, driving without a valid license: 10 points, ₦10,000 fine
Speed limit violation: 5 points, ₦5,000 fine
Driving under the influence: 5 points, ₦5,000 fine
Dangerous driving: 10 points, ₦50,000 fine
The FRSC emphasized that these records will be part of drivers’ official histories, potentially affecting those seeking to drive in foreign countries that require driving history extracts.
According to Corps Marshal Mohammed, the penalty points system is not only a deterrent but also a step towards stricter traffic law enforcement, ensuring that reckless driving habits are curbed.
He reiterated that the initiative aligns with the FRSC’s broader mandate to promote road safety and significantly reduce fatalities on Nigerian roads.
With this move, the FRSC signals a firm commitment to holding drivers accountable, fostering a culture of responsible driving, and making Nigerian roads safer for all users.
