FRSC CORPS Marshal Shehu Mohammed Honored by ICAN for Transformational Leadership By Raymond Enoch
In a celebration of excellence, integrity, and visionary leadership, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has honoured the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, with its prestigious Diamond Merit Award.
The award was presented at the Institute’s Annual Dinner and Merit Award Ceremony held on Saturday, 17 May 2025, at the Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos.
The event was attended by top industry leaders, policy makers, and professionals, served as a platform to recognise high-achieving accountants and public figures who have set new standards in governance, accountability, and professional conduct. Among them, Shehu Mohammed stood out—not only as a public sector leader but also as a professional accountant who has infused his role at FRSC with values rooted in transparency, discipline, and innovation.
ICAN President, Mr. Davidson Stephen Alaribe, praised the Corps Marshal for his exemplary leadership and commitment to institutional transformation. He explained that the Diamond Merit Award in the Member Accountant Category is specially reserved for professionals who have demonstrated unwavering commitment to excellence and who support the accounting profession through their conduct and impact.
“Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has shown exceptional accountability in his management of the Federal Road Safety Corps. His transformational leadership has not only redefined operational standards within the FRSC but also served as a benchmark for ethical governance,” Alaribe stated.
Since assuming leadership at the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed has implemented reforms aimed at repositioning the Corps for greater efficiency and public service delivery. These reforms span digitization of road safety processes, human capacity development, and strengthened enforcement strategies—all of which have led to notable reductions in road accidents and improved road safety culture across Nigeria.
Responding to the honour, an elated Mohammed described the recognition as “a call to even greater commitment, transparency, and accountability.” He thanked ICAN for what he described as an “objective and professional gesture,” emphasizing that the award would serve as motivation to further uphold the values that define effective public service.
Beyond the awards, the ceremony was a reaffirmation of ICAN’s longstanding role as Nigeria’s foremost accounting body—a body known for its stringent standards and professional discipline. It also underlined the Institute’s belief that good governance begins with individual character and institutional transparency.
The event was not just a celebration of the past, but a promise of continued excellence—of leaders like Shehu Mohammed who bridge professional integrity and public impact, and of institutions like ICAN that continue to shine the spotlight on Nigeria’s unsung reformers.
As Nigeria grapples with issues of accountability and effective governance, honours like the ICAN Diamond Merit Award remind us that transformational leadership, though rare, is not beyond reach. In the quiet but resolute steps of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, a road less traveled is being paved—with discipline, integrity, and vision.
