EU Strengthens Migration Governance in Nigeria with Launch of Strategic Steering Committee. By Raymond Enoch
In a significant move to enhance migration governance in Nigeria, the European Union (EU) has inaugurated the Steering Committee for Support to Migration Governance in Nigeria Component 3.
This initiative underscores the EU’s commitment to a comprehensive, rights-based approach to migration management in West Africa.
The program, implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), and key Nigerian stakeholders, aims to strengthen institutional frameworks and combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling. It aligns with Nigeria’s national development goals and international commitments, focusing on improving migration management, protecting migrants’ rights, and creating better opportunities at home.
Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that the EU is committed to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in managing migration effectively and humanely. The initiative is part of a broader EU strategy to address migration challenges in West Africa through regional coordination and national policy implementation.
This development marks a pivotal step in the EU-Nigeria partnership, aiming to create a more structured and sustainable approach to migration that benefits both Nigeria and the broader West African region.
