EU, Germany Launch Small Hydropower Initiative in Nigeria to Boost Clean Energy and Local Capacity By Raymond Enoch
The European Union (EU) and Germany have officially launched the Small Hydropower (SHP) Development Project in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in their collaborative efforts under the Global Gateway strategy. The initiative aims to deliver clean, sustainable energy while advancing agricultural productivity and rural development.
During the Steering Committee meeting held today, the project was officially launched in Gombe State, with strong enthusiasm and commitment expressed by local government officials. The EU-funded SHP Development Initiative is designed to promote infrastructure investment that ensures long-term sustainability and local ownership.
As part of this effort, selected Nigerian professionals will undergo capacity development training in Germany. These individuals will play a key role in overseeing and sustaining Nigeria’s clean energy transition. Additionally, Plateau, Abia, and Taraba States have expressed readiness to subscribe to the EU-funded SHP project, further expanding its reach and impact.
This project underscores the EU and Germany’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy sector and fostering sustainable development through collaborative partnerships.
