ECOWAS Unveils Groundbreaking Digital Platform to Combat Drug Abuse Across West Africa.
By Raymond Enoch
In a historic move marking its 50th anniversary, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a state-of-the-art digital platform designed to revolutionize the region’s response to drug abuse. This initiative was unveiled during a high-profile workshop held from April 23 to 25, 2024, at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The workshop centered on validating the 2024 West African Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (WENDU) report, which provides the most comprehensive and accurate data on drug use and trafficking trends across the region. The newly introduced platform offers governments and agencies real-time access to this critical data, enabling faster responses and more informed policy-making.
Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “While our focus today is on strengthening our entire region’s capacity to manage drug-related issues, we are particularly attentive to the acute challenges faced by Sierra Leone. We are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to mobilizing targeted support as part of our regional strategy.”

This digital transformation is not just about statistics; it’s about empowering Member States with the tools needed to make evidence-based decisions that can save lives and enhance community safety. The platform is a collaborative effort, supported by the European Union and ENACT-Africa, and is a testament to ECOWAS’s commitment to addressing the region’s drug abuse challenges through innovation and regional solidarity.
As ECOWAS celebrates five decades of regional integration, this initiative underscores the organization’s dedication to leveraging technology and data to foster a safer and more resilient West Africa.
This development marks a significant milestone in ECOWAS’s ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and promote public health across West Africa.
