The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to kick off its Golden Jubilee celebrations Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Accra, Ghana, marking 50 years of regional integration, unity, and progress.
The landmark event will bring together the Heads of State and Government of the Member States, reaffirming their commitment to the shared vision of economic cooperation and regional development.
ECOWAS founded May 28th, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria, has evolved into one of Africa’s most dynamic and institutionally-organised Regional Economic Communities (RECs), playing a pivotal role in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across West Africa.
The launch event in Accra will feature a rich blend of ceremonial and cultural highlights, symbolising the community’s journey over the last five decades. Key among the activities will be the unveiling of the ECOWAS Golden Jubilee logo and theme, which will serve as visual and ideological anchors for a year-long celebration of unity and accomplishments.
Artistic and cultural performances from across the region will also take centre stage, offering a vibrant portrayal of ECOWAS’s historical milestones—from its inception in Lagos by the visionary Founding Fathers to its transformative reforms and flagship achievements in governance, economic integration, and human development.
As the momentum gathers so far, the Jubilee celebration is expected to serve not only as a moment of reflection but also as a rallying point for the community’s renewed aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity in West Africa.
