The ECOWAS Resident Representative Office in Mali marked a significant milestone as it organized a solemn handover ceremony, signaling the end of His Excellency Mr. Mário Gomes Fernandes’ tenure as Resident Representative. His leadership, which began in September 2022, was lauded for its role in improving professional conditions, enhancing civil society capacities, and strengthening cooperation between ECOWAS and the Malian authorities.

Addressing staff and guests at the event, Mr. Fernandes expressed his deep satisfaction with the strides made during his mission. He emphasized the significant impact made under his guidance, particularly in optimizing staff working conditions and fostering effective communication strategies to promote ECOWAS’ accomplishments across Mali. Mr. Fernandes noted the enhanced visibility of ECOWAS’ initiatives, which played a crucial role in solidifying the organization’s presence in the region.

“I am proud of our collective effort to bring tangible results, from capacity-building initiatives to forging stronger ties between ECOWAS and civil society organizations,” said Mr. Fernandes. “We have ensured that the people of Mali are increasingly aware and engaged with the achievements of ECOWAS.”
A central part of his mandate, Mr. Fernandes highlighted, was the fostering of harmonious relations between ECOWAS and the Malian government, focusing on collaboration that benefitted both parties and advanced the region’s development goals. His work, which mirrored his previous role in Guinea, underscored his commitment to regional cooperation and solidarity.
In a moving address, Mr. Funsho Oladele Ibrahim, Political Advisor and Chargé d’Affaires a.i., spoke on behalf of the staff, offering heartfelt appreciation for Mr. Fernandes’ dedication and leadership. “His commitment to the Malian people and the ECOWAS mission has left an indelible mark on all of us. His achievements will continue to inspire future efforts toward a unified and prosperous West Africa,” Ibrahim stated.
As Mr. Fernandes prepares to step down, his departure marks not only the close of a successful chapter in Mali but also a testament to the power of diplomacy, collaboration, and shared vision in overcoming regional challenges. His final remarks expressed optimism for Mali’s future, wishing for continued prosperity and lasting peace within the ECOWAS community.
In his farewell message, Mr. Fernandes left a lasting hope for continued cooperation and unity across the ECOWAS nations, urging lasting harmony as the region strives toward a brighter future for all.
